Where the Story Begins
Spring River begins at Mammoth Spring in northern Arkansas, just south of the Missouri state line. Mammoth Spring is one of the largest natural springs in the world. Millions of gallons of clear, cool water flow from the spring every hour, forming a 10-acre lake before becoming the Spring River.
That steady flow of cold spring water helped shape the land, the town, and generations of life along the river.
A River Built Into the Community
Long before Spring River became known for fishing and floating, the water from Mammoth Spring helped power the local economy.
Early settlers called the area “Head of the River.” A grist mill used the spring’s water, and the arrival of the railroad in 1886 helped the town grow. A dam built in the 1880s supported milling operations, and the same water source later helped power a hydroelectric plant that operated until 1972.
The restored 1886 railroad depot still stands today, along with remains of the old mill and hydroelectric operation.
Cold Water, Fishing and Life Outside
Mammoth Spring maintains a water temperature of about 58 degrees and feeds the Spring River year-round. That dependable flow helped make Spring River one of the region’s best-known trout fishing and floating destinations.
The area also has a long connection to fish conservation. Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery was established in the early 1900s because of the constant supply of cool spring water and easy railroad access. Today, the hatchery continues raising aquatic species for recreation and conservation.
